On Tuesday, March 4, residents of the Missouri Valley Community School District will consider renewing the district’s voted Physical Plant and Equipment Levy (PPEL) and adopting a Revenue Purpose Statement (RPS). MVCSD is one of the more than 85% of school districts statewide that has a voted PPEL to support infrastructure and equipment repairs, purchases, and improvements. Voted PPELs must be renewed by voters every 10 years to remain in place. Our existing levy has a rate of $1.34 per $1,000 of taxable property value, which would remain the same if at least 50% of voters approve the measure. A Revenue Purpose Statement guides how Iowa school districts are able to spend revenue received from the statewide one-cent sales tax fund, known as SAVE. If approved, the RPS will provide MVCSD the flexibility to use this money in a manner most effective for our district and students. An approved RPS on March 4 would NOT lead to an increase in local property or sales taxes, and it also would NOT create a new tax or extend an existing tax. In-person absentee voting for the March 4 election is available at your county auditor’s office. Ballots can be cast weekdays during regular business hours until March 3. For MVCSD residents in Harrison County, the auditor’s office is located at 111 N. 2nd Ave., in Logan. For those in Pottawattamie County, the auditor is at 227 S. 6th St., in Council Bluffs. On the ballot is a voted Physical Plant and Equipment Levy (PPEL) and a Revenue Purpose Statement for MVCSD.
