Dear Missouri Valley Community School District Parents and Guardians, I hope this message finds you well. As part of our ongoing commitment to maintaining a safe and secure learning environment for our students, the Missouri Valley Safety Team, along with the Missouri Valley Police Department and Harrison County Sheriff's Department, will be working together to conduct a Reunification Walkthrough Drill for students in grades 6-12 on Wednesday, March 6, 2024 at 8:30am. This drill is a proactive measure to ensure that our staff, students, and families are well-prepared for any unforeseen circumstances that may require a reunification process. During the Reunification Walkthrough Drill, students in grades 6-12 will be transported via MVCSD buses to a predetermined off-site location. This exercise allows us to practice our evacuation, and transportation procedures needed when a Standard Reunification Method is needed. We will be assessing our evacuation process, our transportation process, and our location space. Please take note of the following important details regarding the Reunification Walkthrough Drill: Date: Wednesday, March 6, 2024 Time: 8:30 am - 10:15 am Location: St. Pat’s Catholic Church & Houdek Center Late Arriving Students: If your student typically arrives or leaves between 8:20-10:15, please do not send them until 10:15 as the building will not be accessible for anyone to enter. If your student has an appointment or has a modified schedule where they would need to leave during this time, we ask that you keep them home because students will not be allowed to leave during the Reunification Drill. These students may return after 10:15. In the event of an actual emergency requiring reunification, information and instructions will be communicated through our established communication channels, including email, text messages, and the school website. We understand that reunification drills may raise questions or concerns. Please be assured that this exercise is part of our commitment to enhancing the safety and preparedness of our school community. If you have any specific concerns or questions, feel free to contact the District Office at 712-642-2706, ext 4, or email Mrs. Gochenour at cgochenour@movalleycsd.org. I appreciate your cooperation and understanding as we work together to ensure the well-being of our students. Thank you for your continued support. Sincerely, Christi Gochenour Superintendent Missouri Valley Community School District

8th Grade Literacy is working on a novel study for “Touching Spirit Bear”, a realistic fiction piece where students delve into character traits, what makes a protagonist and antagonist and how character traits evolve over time, through conflict and resolution. They are also making connections with text-to-text, text-to-self and text-to world. The setting for our novel is the northern-most point of Alaska so we’ve been developing a deeper understanding of the arctic-like habitat and Native Alaskan tribes too. #MVPride

Today at the middle school and high school we implemented our first advisory time. Why did we decide to implement Advisory time? We received feedback from the School Improvement Advisory Committee and community partners about continuing the positive activities and impacts they have seen from elementary Family Groups. We also had feedback from our students and staff regarding additional ways that we could make better connections; adult-student and student-student. If students understand and connect with others from different grade levels, with different experiences, and different backgrounds, it can help them create a sense of belonging and connectedness (can reduce feelings of isolation and enhance the overall school experience). Staff also wanted to learn more about students and continue to build relationships with them during non-academic time. We know that continuing to build relationships can be a key to a positive school experience. Advisory groups can be a way to contribute to creating a positive school culture by reinforcing positive interactions with each other and working on building skills students can use throughout their lifetime (communication skills, leadership development, character development, goal setting, etc.). An added bonus—we wanted to create a fun and safe space for students to be a part of another community. Somewhere different than the classroom, but not specific to their interests, such as music, art, or sports, where they are interacting with mostly people that they already know. We had a great first day of advisory and look forward to our next monthly activity! #MVPride

A goal in the middle school this year has been making our hallways more about our students and establishing school pride! At the beginning of the year we added new graphics and a student information board located outside the office. We took these frames in the hallway to help support our goal! Pictures included are from athletics, activities, science labs, classroom activities, school dances and more! Our students have a blast! Thanks Mrs. Epperly for helping in completing the project! #MVPride
