Problem Solving Unknown Words

?

  Strategies for K-2 Students

When I come to a word I don’t know, I can……

  • Look at the picture
  • Think about the story
  • Look at how the word begins
  • Get my mouth ready to say the word
  • Think about a word I know that has the same part in it, i.e. cat/bat
  • Guess and see if it makes sense, sounds right, and looks right
  • Go back and reread
  • Skip the word and read on.  It may POP into my brain.
