Little Reds Awesome Accelerated Reading Store!
Accelerated Reading is a program that allows students to check out books from the library at his or her own reading level. A computerized test sets these levels at the beginning of the year. When students have finished reading their book, they are given the opportunity to take a comprehension test on the computer to see how well they have understood the book. If they pass the test, a certain number of points will have been earned and the computer keeps track of these points. Students work towards individual point goals set by their classroom teacher. As the students read towards their goal, they will have the opportunity to spend their points like money in the AR store. The students will “shop” at the AR store at the end of every quarter in the Media Center. There will be awards given for the top students per grade level quarterly and for every student that breaks 100 points in a quarter will earn a small reading trophy that proclaims them an All Star Reader!
Second through fifth grade will be going by points. Short books will have fewer point values, and longer books having greater point values. There are many different items to choose from in the store, each having different cost values. Students will be able to spend their accumulated points or tests passed each month. They may also save their points to purchase bigger items as the year goes on.
Something else fun will be “Grab Bag Fridays”. Students who have passed a test in that week will have their name placed in a drawing and some lucky students will win prizes from the store “free of charge”.
Our main goal is to increase the student’s excitement towards reading by giving them a boost with some awesome incentives. We are very excited and hope to see everyone reading!
