AR begins for 3rd grade students
The more you read the more you earn.....

Accelerated Reader (AR) has been a part of every students' daily school routine since about the middle of 1st grade. Just like last year, we have an incentive program set-up (many continued thanks to Mrs. Janssen).
I have given each student an AR Reading Range (example: 2.6-3.6 means 2nd grade 6th month to 3rd grade 6th month), based on the STAR Reading Test. Students use their AR range to determine which level books to check-out. We will take the STAR test each quarter and adjust Reading Ranges as needed. I have also given each student a points goal to earn each quarter. Each student has a book mark with their Reading Range listed and the points goal they are trying to reach. Please ask you child about their AR level and points goal.
Every point a student earns can be used to "buy" prizes from the AR store. Students choose AR books in their Reading Range and each quiz they pass (85% or higher) they earn points. The more points each student earns the bigger the prize they can purchase. Students can also choose to collect their points and cash them in either once a quarter, once a semester or once a year.
Mrs. Janssen will allow students to "spend" their points once a month. The AR Store will be housed in her room. She has ordered many cool items and all my 3rd graders seem very excited about the possibilities. In addition to the monthly store, students will also get the chance for free prizes. Each time they pass a quiz they will put their name into a basket. Mrs. Janssen will draw names randomly at least once every two weeks and award prizes to those students.
If you have any questions about AR, Reading Ranges or points goals, please feel free to e-mail me at cchristensen@movalley.k12.ia.us.
As always, continue to encourage your child to read, read, read. And, your continued support is always appreciated.
