HS Art Syllabus
Educator: Marie Rangel
Educational Philosophy:
The language of art can be spoken by anyone. Our words are the elements of art; our grammar, the principles of art. Just as our thoughts are only as effective as our spoken word, so it is also with the visual language. An artist's ability to reveal their inner conversation is a special gift. It is my hope as an educator that you will strive to strengthen it. I will provide the practice; you must supply the initiative. Together, we can make your work speak volumes.
Classroom Expectations:
Students will give their undivided attention during instruction.
Respect will be given to all people in the classroom setting.
Students are expected to use their time well and to seek assistance.
Tools and supplies will be used as intended- SAFELY.
Everyone is responsible for maintaining the studio's appearance.
Consequences of Failing to Meet These Expectations:
Verbal Warning
Time Owed- 15 seconds per incident, up to one minute after class
Detention Assigned
Office Referral
*Students posing an immediate physical threat to others or creating an environment where learning cannot occur (LOUD and disruptive behavior) are not subject to any warning- they will be given an office referral immediately. The actions of one student should not interfere with the ability of an entire class to learn.
*Detention will be assigned for anyone whose name is left by a substitute teacher as having given him/her problems. I expect substitutes to be treated with the utmost respect and will not question their authority in my absence.
*Time owed will be assigned if you leave your work area or supplies for someone else to clean. This will consist of 30 minutes either before or after school, or a study hall, in which you will be given work within the artroom. It will not be referred to the office.
Class Policies:
Notebooks:
This course provides a spiral notebook. Consider this your text for the course. Packets have been provided in the notebook to cover each unit. They will include a description of the assignment, objectives and vocabulary for the unit, sketch paper, questions for critique, and a rubric by which the project will be graded, as well as any information necessary for additional techniques.
It is your responsibility to keep all copies you are given, as they will be used as review material. Packets will be graded twice throughout each unit; once when the sketches are complete, and again when the project is due. Grade reports will be handed out periodically and may be placed in this binder as well.
Tests:
A written exam will be given for each quarter. On occasion, announced unit exams may be given to break up the material. The purpose of exams is to reinforce class discussion, vocabulary, and the technical knowledge you will acquire. They will cover only what is studied in class and review will be offered in advance. Tests will account for 10% of the cumulative grade for the semester.
Homework:
This usually consists of a sketch for each project. Also, any project you are behind on becomes homework to be completed. After a due date has passed, it is expected that any further work done on a project will be done on your own time out of class. I am available immediately before and after school. Please make arrangements as needed.
Absence:
Absent students are responsible for making up any missed work. Be sure to get any vocabulary given while you were not present. It is your responsibility to consult with the teacher to see if any work was assigned or copies handed out. I will expect to see you in on your own time for one period to make up each period missed.
Tardies:
All tardies will be referred to the office.
Makeup Work:
Makeup work due to pre-excused absences must be complete before I will sign any release. On makeup work due to illness or extenuating circumstances (excused by the office) I will follow the guidelines of the student handbook. If you come to me with good reason (desire to exceed the paramaters of the assignment), I may allow an extension of a due date up to one week. Work turned in late for any other reason will have 20% of the grade reduced for each day it is late. After 5 school days, I will not accept late work.
Cleanup/Materials:
Proper care and use of all tools and materials is expected. Your attention to this will be reflected in your participation grade. Clean all materials you use and return them to their proper location. Each person is also responsible for his or her work area- including floor, sink, and table. These must be clean before dismissal. Dismissal is signaled by the teacher, not the bell. You are to remain at your tables while waiting to be dismissed, not by the door.
You are financially responsible for tools used in and out of the classroom. Occasionally materials may be signed out to you for work at home- with this understanding. Also, it may be necessary to supply your own materials for given projects. These items are usually of a found object nature.
General Information:
Your time in this classroom is for work from this course only. It is not a study hall. Do not ask for passes to the library or computer lab to do work for other classes. Bring what you need from your locker, as I will not write passes for you to go during class time. I will, however, not ask questions about the need to get a drink of water or to use the restroom- I trust you to know your own body. Do not abuse this arrangement.
Each class has space designated to store the work and materials for that class. Please place any work in the space given so it does not get misplaced or dirtied by materials from another class. Only students from the ceramics classes belong in the kiln room. Students are not permitted in the storeroom without the teacher, nor does any student belong behind my counter.
Discussion is part of your learning. Not all your work is manual; the most important part must be done with your mind. We will discuss expectations of projects, have critiques, and learn about the history of art as background for projects and to help us formulate ideas for our work. Participation is expected from all students and will be reflected in your participation grade.
No food or drink of any kind will be permitted in the art room.
Grading Policies:
Incomplete projects receive no grades.
Due dates are announced well in advance. Work is expected to be turned in on the due date unless a student has been absent one of the two days prior or has made alternative arrangements with the instructor in advance. Otherwise, 20% will be deducted for each day a project is late. Work will not be accepted on the 5th day late.
All projects must be clearly identified with your name and class. It is your responsibility to make sure they are handed in on time and not left in storage.
Grades are broken down by percentage into the following categories:
Projects/ Sketches - 75% per quarter
Participation- 25 % per quarter
To include daily participation, vocabulary, and reviews
*Tests- 10% of cumulative semester grade
To include any tests and WIC participation (1 entry expected)
