Course Description

 

This class is designed for students that need modifications to gain understanding and practical knowledge in use of basic English skills. Throughout this course we will work to encourage development of students’ testing abilities, study skills and habits. Growth & development of English language and communications usage and skills will consist of practice in a variety of modalities utilizing multiple intelligence strategies based on assessments of each students learning style and strengths. Individualized instruction will be geared toward optimizing student growth in all aspects of human communications skills. A growth of awareness and optimal development of verbal and non-verbal components of expressive language will be encouraged through role playing and modeling of various communications skills.

 

The focus of this class will be the many uses of our language in everyday communications. The use of appropriate receptive and expressive language skills will be reinforced through practical applications and practice.

 

Good communications skills are essential for success in today’s world. Students will practice both expressive (WRITING & SPEAKING) as well as receptive (READING & LISTENING) skills with a goal of their achieving a functional mastery of these skills. Our focus will be on successfully integrating the use of the many forms of communication necessary in daily life.

 

Rules and Expectations

 

~Please remember that actions all have consequences and you are responsible for your actions!

  1. Come to class ready to learn.
  2. Always wear a smile when you enter the classroom.
  3.  Listen to and follow directions given by the teacher and associates.

4.  Be respectful of yourself and others.

5.  Keep your hands and objects to yourself.

6. Be in class on time with materials needed.

7. Complete and turn in assignments on time.

8. Teacher and associates’ desks are off limits.

 

Grading Scale

Percentages will be figured based on total points.

Points will be assigned for the following:

A. Tests -to be given after each unit.

B.  Oral & Written Assessments of Learning- will be practiced throughout each unit.

C. Class participation - 25 points a week (5 points each day) one point each day to be awarded for participation components consisting of 1) attendance/promptness, 2) level of engagement, 3) listening skills, 4) behavior & 5) preparation. Points will be lost for inappropriate behavior.

D. Daily work - this includes worksheets, projects, and questions

     and discussions.

 

90-100% = A   80-89% = B    70-79% = C    60-69% = D    0-59% = F

 

Absences

If you are absent, you have 2 days for each day gone to make up the work. When you return from being absent, check the board first to see what assignments you missed. Then talk to an associate or the teacher about getting your makeup materials and/or information.

 

Work missed due to an unexcused absence will be recorded as a zero.

 

Disruptive Behaviors

You are responsible for your own behavior at all times. No excuses for inappropriate behavior will be accepted!

If you engage in any behavior that disrupts the class and/or is disrespectful of your teacher or classmates, you will be asked to leave the room to go see Mrs. Drees. If this request is not honored, an associate will go find Mrs. Drees and she will escort you to her office to face the consequences of your actions.
