The ABC’s of Miss Hegna’s Kindergarten
Absence
If your child will be absent, please call the office or email and let us know. (712-642-2779 or cmcmurray@movalley.k12.ia.us)
Breakfast
A school breakfast is served every morning from 7:55-8:20 AM.
Calendar
Each month the school sends a calendar with the lunch menu on one side and the activities scheduled for that month on the other - please check this calendar to stay up to date!
Dismissal
Please let me know with a note or phone call if there is a change in your child’s regular dismissal plans. It sure makes things run more smoothly at the end of the school day if everyone is on the same page.
If you have questions or concerns e-mail me at khegna@movalley.k12.ia.us. I would love to hear from you.
Folders
Each student has a Home to School folder. I will send it home as we have papers to send back or any important notes. I would like the folder to come back everyday, so we can keep our communication open.
Good Behavior
We are working very hard on the rules and what we need to do to help us be able to learn best. Please be patient with your child as they learn the rules. If you could discuss with them what our rules are and how important it is to follow them, it would really mean a lot to your child to hear it from you.
Give Me 5:
1. Eyes on the speaker
2. Ears listening
3. Mouths quiet
4. Hands and feet to myself
5. Hearts caring
Help at Home
You are your child’s most important teacher! Your support of school activities makes your child feel important and sends the message that you value school!
Independence
Your child is learning to do more and more on his/her own. Please encourage this independence, especially in shoe tying, zippers, snaps, and cold weather dressing.
Journals
In these journals the kindergartners combine their emerging writing skills with their drawing skills. As the children are exposed to a variety of phonics and reading experiences, journal entries will move from drawings and “inventive” spellings towards more conventional writing.
Kindness
Students in our classroom are encouraged and expected to treat all members of our class as well as others with kindness and respect. Bothering others, bullying and interrupting learning will not be tolerated.
Library
Students will visit Mrs. Fitzpatrick twice a week, Tuesday and Friday, to listen to a story and return/check-out a book.
Music
Students will join Miss Spears twice a week, Monday and Wednesday, to learn new songs.
Newsletter
I will send a newsletter each Friday to keep you up-to-date on the happenings in our classroom.
Orders
I will send home book orders each month. Remember that they are completely optional. Please return the completed order along with a check made out to the book club in an envelope with your child's name on it by the date given. We can not accept cash for these.
Parties and Celebrations
There are three main parties each year---Halloween, Christmas and Valentine’s Day. The room parents usually organize these events and coordinate volunteers. All are welcome to participate in the festivities! We will have some other celebrations that I will organize such as the 100th Day of School.
Questions
If you ever have a question or concern, feel free to call me at school or e-mail.
Read, Read, Read!
It is important that your child see you read and also be read to. Studies show that the more they read and are read to, the better they will do in reading and most other areas of school.
Share bag
The selected Child of the Day will bring home the share bag. Together with your child, discuss what your child would like to share with the class and put it in the bag and bring it back to school the next day.
Toys
Bringing toys to school is discouraged because it distracts children from learning. If a toy is accidentally lost or broken, feelings will be hurt. Students may only bring a toy if it is their share day – it will then be left in their bag.
Unique
Kindergartners learn that they are special and unique. They have opportunities to describe how they are alike as well as different from others. They share their culture and learn about different cultures within the class.
Visitors
If you are coming to visit please remember to sign-in at the office. This is for all our children’s safety. Thanks.
Whole body
A Kindergarten student uses the whole body to learn. We’ll use our eyes, our ears, our taste, our touch, and our sense of rhythm to learn. Children are surrounded with literature and words. Whole body is a natural and exciting method of teaching children.
XVIII
We have 18 children in our class. Please keep this in mind when sending things for the whole class.
YES , they can do it by themselves. Keep up the encouragement and recognize their successes!
Zzzzz
Make sure that your child gets plenty of rest. Setting and keeping a bedtime is a wonderful gift you can give to your child. It will help them to be alert and ready to learn each day!
