Guidelines for Sixth Grade Iowa History Project 2008
1. The project is due on Monday, April 7, 2008. This grade will go on the fourth quarter grades.
2. During the week of April 7th each student will present his or her project to his or her social studies class.
3. Any topic related to Iowa is suitable for the project. It can be a place, person, thing or idea associated with Iowa. Some suggestions would be: a. Agriculture in Iowa or any other thing or idea associated with Iowa b. A famous person from Iowa (Herbert Hoover, Donna Reed, John Wayne, just to name a few) c. Famous places in Iowa (Covered Bridges of Madison County, Amana Colonies, LeMars, Iowa…. the ice cream capital of the world!) d. Native American tribes that were once in Iowa (a few would be the Sac, Ioway, Mesquaki) e. Explorers or groups of people that once were in Iowa (Lewis and Clark, Marquette and Joliet, Zebulon Pike)
4. How the project is presented is up to the student. There is no wrong way to so this, however, I do require that each project contain researched information that is typed and rephrased in their own words and pictures to go along with the topic. Some suggestions for the project are to use a tri-fold poster or presentation board to show their work. A power point presentation on the computer, making models, dressing up according to your project are all ideas that are suitable. I urge the kids to be creative! This project needs to reflect 9 weeks worth of work. I will give the students at least one day a week to work in class and to use the Internet and computers as needed. The students will need to be working on the project outside of class as well.
5. A copy of my grading rubric will be sent home so you know how I will be grading the project.
6. There will be "Iowa History Night" in the high school gym where all sixth graders will be showing off their projects for family and friends. More information will be coming on this in the coming weeks. All sixth graders are expected to attend this event. Date to be announced later.
7. Please sign below so I know that you are aware that your student is working on this project and is responsible for having it done by April 7th. Please keep one copy at home for later reference if needed.
8. If you have any questions about the expectations, feel free to contact me at school at 642-2707 or via e-mail at: dvoster@movalley.k12.ia.us
9. Just a helpful hint: if you choose to buy a tri-fold presentation board (made out of cardboard), you can find them at Ace Hardware here in town. You can also find them in different sizes and colors at Walmart, Hobby Lobby, Office Max, Office Depot and at a teacher supply store called Playtime Schooltime located at 5310 N. 99th St. in Omaha. (phone # is (402) 571-1717) Thank you in advance for your support in helping to make this a successful experience for your child. This is a very exciting and fun part of our Iowa History unit.
